I just remembered that you also asked how I got into the field. Well, I wanted to do experimental physics, because theory almost always involved more or less involved pen+paper calculations and that's not really what i enjoy about physics. I also wanted to do something with light, because, well, I don't know why. That left 3-4 groups at my university where I could do my Bachelor thesis (and a few external research institutes but as Bachelor student I didn't really know about them). Also quantum computation stuff is really fascinating and that's a possible application for what is done in the group I'm in now. Add to this that we have a really relaxed and awesome working atmosphere (including a big breakfast at our weekly group meetings) and possibly the nicest Prof I know, I jumped into there. We also have some old Italian coffee machine ("Mr. Coffee" who is a semi-official group member) that's apparently makes really awesome coffee, but I don't really drink coffee, so I can't judge that. I then did my Master's thesis in the same group, because a) I liked it there and b) it was the way of least resistance.
I WOULD LOVE THIS ANNO STYLE GAME. I really like the ideas you're cooking! My first mafia game is in the vetting process too and I'm really excited about modding.
I don't have many concrete ideas about games right now, but I'd like to make something someday like Firewatch. I have a creative writing background so story structure is really important to me and Firewatch has a really excellent narrative structure, the likes of which we don't often see in games. But I love strategy and building games (not minecraft though...) - I'd love to make a mod for something like Crusader Kings II but man, the complexity!
What are the unity projects you were talking about? Also, can you send me a link to one of your papers (preferably open access or arxiv or something)? I'm quite interested in how something like that looks.
Oh, two things I forgot: I once prototyped a card/board game loosely based on Dungeon Dice Monsters (a game within the yugioh universe. There was a GBA game focused on it. The basic concept is really really interesting but I think the actual rules of the game leave lot of room for improvements). It had some balancing issues but in principle worked. Unfortunately I had nobody who wanted to platest iterations so that's another item on my pile of unfinished projects.
The second thing is my concept for an anno style strategy game. Mostly realism and complexity additions. One big goal was to make building beautiful cities not inefficient but beneficial. I have no clue if my concepts are fun or work at all and in that case I probably will never find out unless I unexpectedly "find" enough money to fund my own gaming studio
Oh yeah, data is very important. I mean, in STEM fields that's kind of a non-issue since they hammer it into you from the very beginning and without correct data treatment you won't get anywhere. But I think especially in the "soft" fields you have to take care to not write a subjective opinion piece. Opinion pieces can be really nice to read (and I enjoy doing so) but it's nothing I'd want public funding for... How do you get your data, btw? Online surveys or do you get statistics about characters directly from the studios?
As for myself: I have designed a successful Mafia game, have one other currently in mod-review and already plans for the next three. I really enjoy reading MaRo's blog (he's the head of design for Magic The Gathering) and started doing my own expansion. Never finished it, though.
A friend and I made a local multiplayer version of Snake in C++ using the simple SDL engine. It had special items and a completely customizable visual style (like a mod; make your own sprites, put them in a folder and it becomes selectable from the ingame menu. I guess you could call it rudimentary mod support, lol) and in general is just a ton of fun. We unfortunately could never wrap our head around how to even properly tackle non-local multiplayer, though.
I have quite a detailed concept in my head about a puzzle game where you indirectly control the "P"C from a top down perspective and have to guide him through several mazes by turning lights on and off. You could also change the environment in the style of the "Labyrinth" board game (no clue how famous that one is in the US; here virtually every child knows it). The "P"C would acknowledge your actions and have discussions with several other characters about what you are (a god? somebody who has secretly built a fuckton of contraptions into the underground research facility where the game would take place?). I even have a final twist:
The second to last level is blatantly unsolvable, but the player gets hinted towards the level files which would have to be plaintext editable. He could then edit the level file so a simple solution exists. That's way after the point at which the "P"C came to the conclusion that you are some allmighty entity. The real last level then would just be me, the game designer, rambling about how the player felt really smart for cheating the system and how he got convinced to actually be a god or something. But he will be put into place by the person who really has the power (me, the game designer). Then the safe file gets erased. It's kind of an exercise on perspectives I think. The relationship between the player and the "P"C has a similar power imbalance than between the game designer and the player. I think all that might be inspired by this really, really god sentence I once read about how we can never understand the motives of god just like ants can never understand the motives of humans. I'm not religious at all, but I like to think about stuff like that. anyway, I'm drifting away from the topic
I once cobbled together a prototype in html5/js but wasn't fully convinced with the graphical design. I'm really bad at art so everything I do has to be very stylized and minimalistic to not look like absolute horsecrap. But I think my approach might have been too simplistic for all the different information and puzzle elements I had to represent. Anyway, then there was a bug I couldn't figure out and the semester started and since then the project is on ice (that was 2 or so years ago).
Oh, we (the friend I made the snake game with and I) also made two custom modules for Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes. One is in the Steam Workshop, the other one was never finished because... I don't really know why.
I see. Although I don't really get the difference between "place" and "space". I mean, I see the difference in your explanation but I don't see how those two concepts map onto the words. Are these established terms in your field? But it surely sounds like an interesting angle, especially as the wannabe game designer I am
Also I have no clue who Ian Bogost is. Wikipedia says a professor in your area. You don't particulary agree with him, I reckon?
I can give you a link to my thesis tomorrow if you're interested. Just don't get lost in the details, especially in the math-y parts of the theory. I figure it has to look like alien language for people not familiar with the formalism... But I hope at least my texts are understandable
Also, I like how we don't even care about the game in here anymore. Have you made peace with our loss yet? I think I have (Although I will of course do my best to cheat out a win anyway). Let's continue talking about other stuff
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR THESIS, LOVER. This is my wheelhouse and I must have details!
It's my masters thesis. (The EU university system is a bit different from the US one. We have a three years bachelor followed by a two years masters. It's theoretically possible but very very rare to start a PhD without a masters degree. In exchange our PhD programs have no mandatory lectures or exams, it's 3+ years only for research and some teaching. Both bachelor and master programs end with a thesis you work on for one (bachelor) or two (master) semester)
I'm working in experimental quantum optics. My bachelor thesis was about a molecular single photon source. I basically helped a PhD student to set up his first experiment and made my thesis out of that process. The master thesis is about two-photon entanglement with possible applications (in the distant future) of using something like it in quantum cryptography. I think I'll just post you the abstract:
Losses over long distances are a big challenge in creating a global quantum communication network. One possibility to minimize those effects is a quantum repeater which can be realized with entangled photons [BCT+14]. At certain nodes of a quantum repeater these photons have to be matched to dissimilar quantum systems, e.g. a storage or processing unit. We produce highly non-degenerate photon pairs with wavelengths at the Cs D1 line (894.3 nm) and the telecom O-band (1316 nm) by parametric down conversion in a periodically poled Lithium-Niobat crystal. Polarization entanglement of these photons has already been demonstrated in previous experiments while operating in a folded-sandwich geometry [DMK+16]. However, polarization is difficult to maintain over long-distance optical fibers. Therefore, in this thesis two different Franson interferometer [Fra89] were set up and characterized to create entanglement in time and position. A concurrence of 0.28(6) was achieved. The long-term goal is to establish a hybrid quantum interface in which we teleport the electronic state of a quantum dot onto a photon at telecom wavelength for long-distance communication.
Hit me up with any questions if you want to know more or if you want to see the whole thing.
Also congrats on your passed exams! What exactly are you working on. I have something with games or at least computers in the back of my head...
I've been mulling this over, too. But I'm not too sure about Sawrian either. But that would leave crimsonphia as Town... At this point I'm assuming either we or Natiko get offed in the night. If there is no NK do not vote on whoever Sawrian claims to have blocked. It could be a Scum ploy to get us to mislynch.
And we can't even say that those person trying to lynch us tomorrow are Scum because I think we actually did look rather scummy. We did start a train on ty4on. So our alleged intention had to be to divert from Crimsonphia. So that would be the better first lynch anyway. But try to sell this to town.
I'm just waiting for the racohrs XBro Scum team with sawrian neutral to be revealed... <_<
Well, I came to the computer in time for the deadline. But the deadline was irrelevant. If Ty flips Town that will look really bad on me because I didn't do much other than sheeping you. But we'll deal with it, I think.
(Also he's totally Scum anyway. Believe)
I start feeling like I let you down a bit here with my spotty activity today. Sorry for that. You're doing god's work in here.
gonna see if people play my game so I can triangulate who might be teammates based on that. ugh, WHAT TO DO
That's hard Wifom territory until we get another scum flip. Speaking of which: I honestly feel like playing the lottery here. Either GAFia as a whole really stepped up their scum game or I'm getting progressively worse at this game...
Concerning your little game: my personal top scum atm would be try4on or racohrs, followed by Sawrian.
I forgot that you are the one who wrote the voting tool. I HAVE THE BEST BOYFRIEND.
I thought that about the NK, too - skirted around it earlier but didn't say it directly. I am interested in the xKark/Sophist theories and will maybe have some thoughts on that later. I just got out of class and have to do some catching up. Do you think it's possible that CrimSoph didn't post much d2 because they were silenced? Seems weird to bus kits then. I wonder if Ty is scum instead and is trying to set that up so everyone looks there for that reason.
I dunno. Did they post significantly less? I can't imagine Scum Crimson being impacted a lot, I think he does his own thing. Scum Sophia, though... maybe.
tbh, I have the gut feeling that this NK is to get us to lynch Sawrian. They are already in a dangerous spot and with Town's weird habit of following up on Scum reads of flipped townies (who don't know any more than themselves) Darryl's fight with Sorian surely won't put them out of it.
But DO NOT write this in the thread yet. I want to see if anybody actively pushes for a Sawrian lynch.
A thing that just came to mind while reading the thread: Do you think FEP's "bussing ouro" slip was by accident or on purpose to set up a mislynch? If it was on purpose, do we expect FEP to come up with such a plan? If not, who would?
That's a lot of ifs but an interesting angle I think. Or am I chasing ghosts here?
Half way through the day and holy smokes rac is scummy as fuck. Do you have any previous experience with him?
Hey, sorry for not being around to support the rac train. Friends came over to drink the leftover beer.
Anyway, I will read D4 during the night phase. Maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after, depends on how my commute back to Berlin tomorrow goes... But before D5. Anything else than Sawrian you want me to explicitly pay attention to?
